Fly Reels

One of the most important pieces of gear for fly fishing is the line storage device, or fly fishing reel and there are many variations of reels available. Simple drums are what the line is wrapped around on most reels. The actual casting is done by pulling line from the reel with your hand and casting the line with the fly rod. The line backing, line size and type are all important with fly fishing reels.

Most reels can be used by either hand depending on how the reel is oriented when mounted on the pole. Most low cost fly reels have the same capabilities, but the material may make a difference in durability. The resistance, or drag, that a fly reel places on a line while reeling in a fish is usually variable, although a lot of anglers will just use the palm of their hand against the fly rod to slow the line pulled out by a hooked fish. Some of the best fly fishing reels have an anti reverse mechanism which keeps the line from being entangled.
